Charleville
Golf was recorded as far back as 1909 in Charleville when “The Irish Golfers Guide” listed the nine hole course of the time as a destination to visit, however the modern club that we know today is a little younger than that, as it came into being back in 1941. While the club may have been established in the early 40s, the course itself first opened for play in 1946.
The success of the course was such that it was extended within 20 years to make it a 12 hole course. However, not content to rest on their laurels, future members again opened their cheque books and in 1981 the expansion into a championship 18-hole course was completed. The final addition to this great test of a golfer’s abilities was completed in 1995 with the opening of the last nine.
Charleville Golf Club, unlike the majority of the clubs in Ireland, is in the enviable position of being able to advertise 27 holes to the visiting golfer.
Nestled on the Cork-Limerick border, on some of the best agricultural land in the state, Charleville is a golf club that ticks all of the boxes required for the modern golfer.
It is an attractive, challenging and economical place to attempt to master the great game and all this is done in the warm and friendly atmosphere created by secretary manager Pat Nagle and his dedicated staff.
Charleville Golf Club welcomes all-comers to its door and is particularly open to societies using its wonderful courses.
COURSE INFORMATION
The two courses provide a challenging and enjoyable test for golfers of all categories. The 18-hole championship course, renowned for its lush fairways and beautiful greens has been extended to incorporate a new custom-designed 9-hole course East Course, which presents magnificent views of the Ballyhoura and Galtee mountains.
The 27 holes are configured to create two distinct courses, the West and East courses. Charleville’s extra nine holes are not just stuck onto the championship course to make up the numbers. They have a character and a life all of their own. The original 18 are generally tight, tree-lined challenging holes that tempt you into shots. There are plenty of rewards on offer for the straight, strategic golfer who plans his route, while the
trees provide plenty of danger as they wait to punish the wayward golfer. Charleville Golf Club’s championship 18 is definitely a course where a good score can be shot but if you are not on your game and you try the impossible, then like any good course, it will make sure you are punished.
The East Course is a more attractive place if one comes to golf courses for the scenery. However if your aim is to challenge yourself, there are plenty of places where your abilities will be tested to the max.
Both courses in Charleville are fair. There are returns for the brave and talented while there are penalties for the reckless and the wayward. All a golfer can reasonably ask from a course is that it is a fair test of his/her abilities and the best compliment that can be paid to Charleville is that it meets that requirement perfectly.
